#1 Address the root issue
Most anti-anxiety medications target the GABA receptor. GABA is the calming neurotransmitter your brain makes to balance hyperstimulating neurotransmitters like glutamate and norepinephrine.
If you’re always stimulating GABA receptors artificially, your brain forgets how to make GABA on its own and can become dependent on antianxiety drugs. You’re not treating the root issue, you’re just taking a band-aid.
The root issue is that you need to make more GABA. Your hypothalamus is the gatekeeper of all your neurotransmitters including GABA. When your hypothalamus is out of balance, your hormones are out of balance, you’re in constant stress mode and your brain is firing hot and fast on norepinephrine and glutamate. If you’re truly in danger then you need these hyperstimulating neurotransmitters to think quickly and get you out of harm’s way.
If you’re not in danger, then too much glutamate and norepinephrine make you feel anxious, afraid, worried. Your thoughts ruminate over and over, you’re hypersensitive to sound and energy, even other people’s emotions. You need GABA to calm you down. But you can’t seem to make enough on your own.
That’s why you need to support your hypothalamus. If your hypothalamus gets the amino acids and nutrients it needs to direct all your neurotransmitter function then your brain will have the resources you need to make GABA. #2 Use Natural Supplements
An anxious brain is hot from overfiring. All those hyperstimulating neurotransmitters frazzle your brain’s wiring. The myelin sheath of your neurons becomes thin. So miscommunication occurs as your brain misfires creating anxiety and stressing out your nervous system. It can feel like your brain is inflamed.
CDP choline is a natural nutraceutical that helps rebuild your neurons’ myelin sheath. CDP choline has been used successfully to help treat brain trauma. Start with 1000mg twice daily for 4-8 weeks to heal your overfiring brain then decrease the dose to 500 mg daily while you train your brain to make more GABA.
Using GABA can act as a rescue measure for breakthrough anxiety. GABA is a safe peptide that has a calming effect. The maximum dose per day is 1500 mg, but I find that doses as little as 100 mg a few times a day is very effective. The amino acids glycine and theonine can help GABA work better.
Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that calms the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. When your adrenals are in flight or fight stress mode, your brain turns off GABA production.
In one clinical trial of people with moderate to severe anxiety, researchers compared the effects of a mixture of 300 mg ashwagandha extract to psychotherapy. After the eight-week trial, the group that received the ashwagandha had decreased anxiety and fatigue and increased concentration, compared to those who had psychotherapy. Ashwagandha may increase the sedative effects of benzodiazepines like Valium, Xanax, and Ativan.
Homeopathic remedies are a safe place to start. Yet it takes a trained homeopathic doctor to assess your type of anxiety to then prescribe the appropriate homeopathic remedy which is specific to your type of anxiety.
#3 Reprogram Your Brain with Scent and Sound.
So once you’re supporting your hypothalamus with Genesis Gold and Sacred Seven and you’re using nutraceuticals like GABA, glycine, theonine and ashwangandha then you can start reprogramming your brain. Your amygdala is the primitive survival part of your brain and the one that hijacks your sensibilities to create your knee jerk anxiety reaction. Once you start feeling the calming effects of GABA, you can use scent and sound to reprogram your amygdala.
Choose a calming scent like lavender and a calming music that you can easily hum to yourself. I prefer to use lavender essential oil and hum a lullaby for my CALM meditation. In the beginning you may need to take Rescue Remedy so your brain associates the scent and sound with the calm. Rescue Remedy is a Bach flower remedy that I’ve used for many years in people and pets for acute anxiety reactions. It works very quickly.
Find a quiet place to sit with your calming scent maybe dab essential oil under your nose or burn a scented candle. Breathe deeply and begin humming softly to yourself your calming song or lullaby. Continue to breathe deeply in the scent, exhaling fully while humming to yourself until you feel a sense of calm. Practice this meditation for five minutes every day…maybe twice a day when you first get up in the morning and before you go to sleep. If you’re providing it the nutrients, your brain will begin to associate the scent and the sound with feeling calm and will make GABA on its own.
Then whenever you begin to feel anxious, just sniff the calming scent and hum the calming song to yourself and you will instantly make GABA and shut down your amygdala’s fear response. While I advise that you carry the essential oil with you, humming alone can create a calming GABA response once your brain is trained.
