My Hormone-Balancing Lifestyle at 64

by | Last updated: Jul 16, 2025 | Menopause | 0 comments

At 64, I don’t really feel my age, and that’s not by accident. Today, I am going to share with you my personal hormone-balancing lifestyle, everything I do to stay energized, clearheaded, and in harmony.

Postmenopause is a major hormonal transition, and we don’t think about it that way. We think of puberty, perimenopause, menopause is the big transition. But postmenopause, you’re living the rest of your life in a different way with a different level of hormones, not just sex hormones, but adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid.

Everything’s shifted. Your body’s changing, your brain’s changing, your gut’s changing, and hopefully your mindset is changing as well. The one thing that I’ve learned in almost 40 years of being a clinician is that you cannot out supplement poor lifestyle habits. What you do, what you eat, how you move, how you think, what you believe makes a huge difference on how healthy you’re going to be today, tomorrow, 20 years from now, until the end of your life.

My Hormone-Balancing Lifestyle at 64

Let me share with you the lifestyle that I have lived, and specifically what I’m doing now as a postmenopausal woman that’s helping me stay healthy.

Wake Up with the Sun

First of all, I wake up with the sun, and I’ve always been a morning person. I’m incredibly sensitive to the day/night cycles. I cannot have even one iota of light in my room at night. The full moon can disrupt my sleep and the rising sun wakes me up.

Take My Genesis Gold®

The first thing I do when I wake up, of course, after going to the bathroom, is to take my Genesis Gold® with a little extra Sacred Seven® amino acids, if I’m under more stress. I know my body needs more hypothalamic support. If I can’t sleep or I have a hot flash at night, then I take extra Sacred Seven® with my Genesis Gold®.

If I’m feeling like I’m coming down with a virus or I get exposed from a patient, or more likely, my granddaughter, I take a bit more Genesis Gold®. Honestly, that’s all I take. Yet, I don’t just take Genesis Gold® in Sacred Seven®, I do a loving kindness prayer. I bless myself physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, then I might be in harmony and at my optimal state of wellness. And then I bless all of you taking Genesis Gold® and Sacred Seven® with me, that you may also be optimally healthy, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

I feel like this is a community, and from whatever is happening for me, whatever I’m learning or experiencing, and of course, I share with you on these YouTube videos and in my posts, but there’s also this vibration we share, this resonance. I want to be there for you as a coach and a cheerleader, and even if it’s just sending you my good energy.

Pour My Coffee

Then I poured my coffee. I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was in my forties. In the late nineties, one of my patients couldn’t afford to see me, but she owned a coffee shop, so we bartered.

So I didn’t really drink coffee at the time, but my husband did, and the kids loved her smoothies. 10 years later, I actually started drinking coffee when I took care of my husband’s 90-year-old grandmother. Gran loved her coffee and nursed that coffee pot all day long. When I was done seeing patients, she would ask me to sit with her in the afternoon and have a cup of coffee and tell her about my day.

It was so lovely just to sit and be held by her grandmotherly energy. I remember that my nana also sat with her coffee, so I thought coffee isn’t just about a beverage, which, yes, has lots of antioxidants. For me, coffee is a meditation. So I always drink my coffee in a real cup and I sit down with it by a window where I can get natural light, and I journal.

Journaling

I write down my dreams, what’s happening in my life, my concerns, and cute things my granddaughter says. I put my emotions down on paper. I’ve done this since I was 14 years old, and it’s been incredibly helpful for my spiritual journey and my mental wellbeing.

To journal.

Time for Gen-Pro™ & Exercise

Then I get ready for my day, wash my face, brush my teeth, apply Gen-Pro™ on my inner thighs.

Thank goodness for this highly absorbable progesterone. It helps me stay calm and focused. Plus, it balances out the low-dose sublingual estradiol I take.

Then I exercise. Morning exercise raises your metabolism. While I used to be a triathlete and still mountain bike and swim, I don’t run anymore. I’ve put enough miles on these joints of mine. So now I hike, bike, walk, or take exercise classes.

The classes are CrossFit training, body conditioning, and weight resistance. And because I’m postmenopausal, I want to maintain my muscle mass and my bone mass.

Breakfast

Then I have my breakfast. Now, usually I will have a little something to eat before my class because I wake up hungry, which is really a good sign that you have good glucose metabolism and are not insulin resistant.

My breakfast, though, is always protein-rich, like cottage cheese or yogurt with fruit and bran, or eggs and veggies, and whole grain toast with avocado. I drink water most of the day. We live in California and have fresh oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and limes. So I use citrus to flavor my water, and by midday, I’ve usually finished with any work I have to do. I’m a morning person, so my best work is done early.

Lunch

Lunch is usually my biggest meal, consisting of protein. Fish, poultry, occasionally meat, always veggies, salad or leftover roasted vegetables, and a complex carb like quinoa or pharaoh. Plus, I always have fats like nuts, seeds, avocado, and drizzle olive oil on everything.

I always know that I did not get enough carbs with that meal if I’m craving sugar after lunch. Dark chocolate usually takes care of that craving, which means I’m not making quite as much cortisol as I need to release stored sugar. That’s a sign I need to either add Sacred Seven® to my Genesis Gold® or up my Genesis Gold®, and it usually makes a difference, so the cravings don’t become a habit.

Now, by late afternoon, I’m usually doing something physically active. Walking the dog or gardening. Something outside. If my energy is low, I’ll have a snack like nuts, fresh guacamole with whole grain chips, or an apple with nut butter, something like that.

I make sure every day I get some connection to nature. I scripted this video sitting on a swing that’s hanging from my oak tree. One of my favorite things to do is to swing and listen to the wind chimes, watch the birds, enjoy the beautiful flowers, and connect to nature.

Dinner

Dinner is really light. Homemade soup, roasted veggies. I prepare dinner usually when I’m making my lunch, so I can enjoy my evening and my family.

I tend to consume most of my food in the daylight hours. I’m a fan of circadian fasting, so my metabolism is a lot higher, and I’m less likely to put on that extra postmenopausal body fat.

At dusk, I try to do a digital detox and get off my devices. I unwind by reading a real book. And at sunset, I like to express my gratitude. What a good day. What was good about this day? Oftentimes, sunset finds me with my husband in the jacuzzi, soaking our active older bones and joints.

Bedtime

I’m usually in bed between 9:30 and 10:30 at the latest, and if I have a lot on my plate, I keep a little journal by my bed where I write down some things I just need to get off my chest, out of my mind, and let them go. Then, if my stress is a little high, I practice my calm meditation where I do my deep breathing to get my GABA levels up. Oftentimes with a scent, sandalwood, lavender. The sweeter scents like vanilla, I don’t really find calming. Actually, the smell of coffee I find calming.

Then I really try to check in with my body hormonally. Yes, I know I’m postmenopausal. I’m not making the same amount of hormones that I used to, but I am still making hormones in a circadian rhythm as well as a seasonal rhythm. So I do find that I’m a little hyperstimulated by the full moon. I don’t sleep as deeply, and I’m more likely to wake up in the middle of the night and have a little trouble going back to sleep during the full moon.

Meditation

So I use that time to meditate. My connection to the moon cycles feels like I’m still cycling, so I go with it. I set my intentions at the New Moon. I check in at the Full Moon. Have I taken the appropriate actions to help my intentions manifest?

Oh, and I also build alters. I light candles, I play special things for my nana and gran, and my mother, who’s now passed, onto my altar. My daughter just recently had a new baby, so I made an altar for her with the intention that she would have a safe delivery and lit a candle before going into the delivery room with her.

I’m a big believer in setting my intentions and creating sacred rituals. Perhaps it’s my Roman Catholic roots influenced by my deep connection to Native American spirituality. I feel very connected to my ancestors; my deceased loved ones don’t feel far away to me at all. Lighting candles and meditating feels like I’m with them at that altar.

Honoring my moon cycles helps me feel balanced. My hormones are balanced. If my moods are good, my brain is functioning, and I’m creative. Able to communicate with my audience in an effective way. I have new ideas, but I’m also open to others’ ideas, and I’m present.

Postmenopausal Presence

Being present is one of the biggest blessings of becoming postmenopausal for me.

It started after I became a nana, when my first granddaughter was born in 2019. Prior to her birth, my talk of being present, well, it was just talk. Being in the moment with that baby, with her as a toddler, and now as a young child has really forced my hand. I am fully present with her when I’m with her, and that sense of presence has expanded to when I’m not with her.

Really fully present with whoever I’m with, whatever I’m doing, and in the moment, and it’s really beautiful. It’s beautiful to be able to be totally accepting of what is, including my own body and myself. Yes, I’m getting older and my body has changed. Yes, I have some gray hairs popping up and my face has lines on it that I didn’t have 20 years ago, but I am so grateful to be fit and healthy, and hormonally balanced.

And at this point in my life, to be able to have the energy I need to play with my grandchild, to travel with my husband, to be able to prepare educational material for you.

I believe that I am my best own healer.

Through my intentions, my belief systems, and my daily actions, this is what works for me.

You don’t need to do all of it. Perhaps you might want to adopt a couple of things that I do to try to stay healthy.
