You’ve tried the elimination diet. You’ve taken probiotics, digestive enzymes, L-glutamine, maybe even prescription medications. Your gut might feel a little better for a while, but then the symptoms come back. Or your gut improves, but your hormones are still a mess – you’re still exhausted, can’t lose weight, can’t sleep, can’t regulate your body temperature. Here’s what nobody’s telling you: healing your gut requires you to support the part of your brain that controls it.
I’m Deborah Maragopoulos, a family nurse practitioner specializing in hormones and hypothalamus function. And I see this pattern constantly – people who’ve done every gut protocol under the sun, spent thousands of dollars, and still aren’t where they want to be. Today I’m going to explain why, and what the missing piece is.
Let Me Be Clear: I’m NOT Saying Gut Healing Protocols Are Wrong
Probiotics, bone broth, elimination diets, gut-healing supplements – these can all be helpful. But here’s the problem: If your hypothalamus is out of balance, your body will keep destroying your gut lining as fast as you’re trying to heal it.
That’s because your hypothalamus controls your stress response through the HPA axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal). When your stress is so high that your hypothalamus does not communicate properly with your adrenals, you produce cortisol at the wrong times and in the wrong amounts.
High levels of cortisol over time damages the gut lining, which increases intestinal permeability by reducing mucus production, leaving the intestines vulnerable to digestive enzymes, which then alters tight junctions between intestinal cells, leading to a leaky gut.
You can take all the L-glutamine in the world to heal gut lining. But if stress hormones are constantly breaking it down, you’re in a losing battle. That’s why so many gut protocols work temporarily, but then symptoms return. Because they don’t address the root cause: hypothalamus dysfunction.
When Your Hypothalamus Is Out of Balance, It Affects Your Entire Immune System
Your hypothalamus regulates inflammation throughout your body. When it’s not functioning optimally, chronic low-grade inflammation occurs (including in the gut). This inflammation keeps the gut in a constant state of irritation. The immune system overreacts to food particles that slip through the widening junctions in your inflamed gut, creating food sensitivities.
Toxins also slip through your inflamed and now permeable intestinal lining into the bloodstream. This triggers more systemic inflammation, which affects your hypothalamus. Your hypothalamus then has an even harder time regulating the immune system and stress response. A vicious cycle that must be broken to heal.
Healing Your Gut Requires Hypothalamus Support
The truth is that probiotics alone can’t break this cycle. You need to support the hypothalamus so it can properly regulate immune response and reduce chronic inflammation.
On the other hand, even if you successfully heal the gut lining and improve the microbiome, if the hypothalamus isn’t functioning optimally – still not sending the right signals to thyroid, adrenals, ovaries – Hormones might improve a little bit (because gut health does affect hormone metabolism), but you won’t get full hormone balance because the command center is still dysfunctional.
I see people who completely heal their gut but still can’t lose weight, suffer from insomnia, hot flashes, brain fog – all the hormone symptoms.
Why? Because the gut is downstream of the real problem. Upstream, the hypothalamus was the root cause all along.
The solution is to both support your gut with probiotics, gut-healing foods, and reducing gut irritants. BUT ALSO support your hypothalamus so that it can: regulate your stress hormones properly to stop the constant gut damage, modulate your immune system to reduce the inflammation, and balance your hormones, which then support gut health.
When you support the hypothalamus, suddenly everything else starts working better. Including all those gut-healing strategies you’ve been trying.
This is Exactly Why I Created Genesis Gold®
It’s a comprehensive hypothalamus support supplement that contains:
- Whole food nutrients your hypothalamus needs to function
- Amino acids to help produce adequate neurotransmitters and hormones
- Adaptogenic herbs to help regulate the stress response
- Anti-inflammatory compounds to calm systemic inflammation
When people start taking Genesis Gold®, they often tell me that the gut protocols they were doing suddenly start working much better. The probiotics finally stick. The elimination diet actually makes a difference. Because now they’re supporting the root cause.
