3 Steps to Heal Your Adrenals Naturally

If you’ve been diagnosed with adrenal fatigue, do you know what you can do to help heal your adrenals?

Your adrenal glands are making organs that produce many types of hormones. Hormones that control your glucose metabolism, your protein and fat metabolism, your blood pressure and your stress response. Your adrenals produce adrenaline – the quick response hormone that induces your fight or flight response. Adrenaline raises your heart rate and your blood pressure so you can get away from danger. Your adrenals also produce aldosterone which controls your saltwater balance and blood pressure.

After an adrenaline surge, your adrenals produce cortisol to fuel your fight or flight. Cortisol helps release stored sugar from your muscles and liver. Your adrenals then release DHEA to help heal the damage due to the stress reliance. DHEA helps your body metabolize protein and fat.

But, unfortunately, chronic stress, poor nutrition, hormonal imbalance and toxins can tax your adrenal glands. Eventually, they become fatigued and cannot produce adequate amounts of cortisol, DHEA or aldosterone.

So, here are three simple tips to help treat adrenal fatigue naturally:

Sleep 8-9 Hours Every Night

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your body is getting enough sleep. And you must sleep in the dark, any light exposure will prevent you from making enough melatonin and keep your adrenals from healing. Healthy adrenals produce the most cortisol and DHEA during the day. Cortisol should not be spiking at night. Deep uninterrupted sleep at night in the dark helps reset your circadian rhythm. Then be sure you get up with the sun to reboot your natural circadian rhythm.

Eat Healthy Fat for Adrenal Hormones

Your adrenals need fat to function. All of your steroid hormones are made of fat. Cortisol, DHEA, and aldosterone are steroid hormones. They have a cholesterol molecule at their core. If you don’t get enough healthy fat in your diet or if you don’t absorb fat well, it’s hard to make an adequate amount of steroid hormones. Be sure you eat at least thirty percent of your calories as fat. One-third of your fat should be saturated. Like fatty fish, butter and coconut oil. Two-thirds of your fat should be unsaturated like olive oil, avocados, nut, seeds.

 Support Your Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis

Your adrenals are stimulated to produce hormones by a negative feedback system. If your cortisol levels are low, your hypothalamus tells your pituitary to tell your adrenals to make more. The hypothalamic hormone that controls your adrenals also controls your thyroid and your glucose metabolism. That’s why it’s so important to support your hypothalamus. Especially when you’re recovering from adrenal fatigue. Otherwise, it will affect your thyroid. For instance, you may develop insulin resistance or hypoglycemia.
